Vance Says Iran War Caused GOP Midterm Losses, Outlines Pivot
VP JD Vance blamed the Iran war for the GOP’s midterm wipeout, saying many 2024 Trump/Vance voters switched sides. “The reason we lost is the war.” He listed four fixes: end the war, focus on costs, put America First, and change the U.S. relationship with Israel.

Vice President JD Vance posted a roughly 600-word statement on X on Wednesday declaring that the Iran war was the decisive factor in Republican losses in the midterm elections and outlining a four-point recovery plan that begins with ending the conflict. The post, which Vance personally drafted and shared with the White House in advance, was widely read as an effort to stake out a distinct position ahead of possible 2028 considerations.
“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote. He noted that many voters who supported the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 switched to Democrats in 2026. Citing conversations with pollsters, he listed the top reasons those voters gave for abandoning the party: ending the war, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, putting America first, and changing the U.S. relationship with Israel. “If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there,” he added. Vance also wrote that Republican voters did show up and that the main problem was not turnout.
President Donald Trump responded later Wednesday by calling Vance’s assessment “largely true,” attributing the losses primarily to higher gasoline prices driven by the conflict while defending the decision to launch the operation. “People agree with what I am doing on Iran but they probably weren’t willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline. I understand that; I don’t agree with that,” Trump said in a Fox News interview. He told other outlets that he would “do it again” if faced with the same choices, arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon was necessary regardless of the political cost. Average U.S. gasoline prices stood at approximately $4.12 per gallon on Wednesday, up from roughly $3.05 a year earlier, according to AAA data.
Donald Trump Jr. reposted Vance’s statement within an hour, writing that “every word of this is 100, 100, 100.” Politico reported that Trump was “totally fine” with the post. Vance has privately opposed leading the United States into another overseas conflict since the campaign against Iran began on February 28, according to prior reporting. The midterm results handed Democrats majorities in both chambers of Congress, with flips in traditionally Republican-held states including Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina. An ABC News voter poll found that 34 percent of voters said the war was “crucial” to their vote.
Vance’s comments arrived amid continued speculation about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s future. Trump has described Hegseth as an early advocate for the war. A White House official has suggested Trump may hold officials accountable during the lame-duck period, though Trump has said he is not considering replacing Hegseth. Vance’s post also referenced a recommendation from Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy for a diplomatic resolution, calling it sound advice. The new Democratic majorities will not take office until January 2027, leaving a window of weeks before any legislative changes to funding or policy can take effect.
