Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as Director of National Intelligence to Support Husband’s Cancer Battle
Gabbard, who has served as DNI since February 2025, submitted her resignation effective June 30, 2026.

WASHINGTON — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation on Friday, citing the need to support her husband, Abraham Williams, as he battles bone cancer.
Gabbard, who has served as DNI since February 2025, submitted her resignation effective June 30, 2026. In a letter to President Donald Trump, she described her husband as her “rock” through 11 years of marriage, military deployments, and public service, and said he now requires her full attention.
During her roughly 16-month tenure, Gabbard focused on shrinking the intelligence community bureaucracy, saving over $700 million annually, eliminating DEI initiatives, declassifying more than 500,000 pages of documents, and strengthening terror watchlists. She played a prominent role in the administration’s efforts to reform intelligence operations and increase transparency on historical issues.
President Trump has not yet named a successor. The resignation comes amid earlier reports of internal tensions related to the Iran conflict, though Gabbard’s announcement framed the decision as entirely personal and family-driven.
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii and 2020 presidential candidate, was a controversial but high-profile pick for the DNI role. Her departure marks one of the most significant personnel changes in the Trump administration to date. A smooth transition is expected over the coming weeks.
