Trump’s All-In Play Pays Off: Darline Graham Holds Lindsey Graham’s Seat

Sen. Darline Graham defeated five-term Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday’s Republican Senate runoff in South Carolina, securing the nomination to succeed her late brother Lindsey Graham after President Trump put more political and financial capital behind her than any other Senate candidate this cycle.

With nearly all precincts reporting, Graham led Norman roughly 52 percent to 48 percent, according to the Associated Press and Decision Desk HQ. The two-week runoff followed an Aug. 11 special primary in which Graham finished first with about 33 percent and Norman second with about 25 percent; neither reached a majority, forcing the head-to-head contest.

Lindsey Graham died July 11 at 71 from an aortic dissection. Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham days later to finish the current term—her first elected office. She had led the state’s Commission for the Blind since 2019 and previously worked in vocational rehabilitation. Trump recruited her to run for the full six-year term, endorsed her early, restated that support after a shaky debate performance on foreign policy, rallied with her Friday in Myrtle Beach, and held a Monday tele-rally. MAGA Inc. spent more than $827,000 on late phone calls and texts, an unusually large cash outlay from a super PAC that has been cautious with other midterm races.

Graham credited the president on election night, telling supporters South Carolina is “truly Trump country.” She performed strongly outside Norman’s Upstate base, including a decisive showing in Horry County after Trump’s Myrtle Beach appearance. Norman, a Freedom Caucus member backed by some sitting senators and former Gov. Nikki Haley, could not expand beyond his home region.

Graham now faces Democrat Annie Andrews, a Charleston pediatrician and gun-safety advocate, in November. Democrats have not won a South Carolina Senate seat since 1998. The outcome preserves Trump’s unbeaten record in Senate Republican primaries this year and demonstrates that his endorsement still moves GOP voters when he shows up in person and his political operation spends. The midterms will test whether that machine can deliver in more competitive states; in deep-red South Carolina, the appointment-plus-endorsement combination held the seat.
