WASHINGTON – President Trump announced Friday he will not sign any other bills until Congress passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, emphasizing a non-watered-down version requiring voter ID and proof of citizenship to ensure election integrity.

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated, "It must be done immediately. It supersedes everything else. I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN VERSION – GO FOR THE GOLD: MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. & PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY – ILLNESS, DISABILITY…" The SAVE Act, passed by the House in February 2026, mandates documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration, aiming to prevent noncitizen voting.

Trump urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to use a talking filibuster to advance the bill, which faces Democratic opposition. Senate Democrats have blocked similar measures, requiring 60 votes to overcome filibusters.

The stance underscores Trump's focus on election security amid midterm preparations, with Republicans holding majorities in both chambers. Critics argue the bill could disenfranchise eligible voters lacking easy access to documents like passports or birth certificates.

This development could stall other legislation, including funding bills, until resolved.
