Trump Unveils New Interim Air Force One: Converted Qatari Boeing 747-8 Ready for Presidential Service
The aircraft, designated as a “VC-25B Bridge” plane, will serve as a secure flying command center for the president until two new purpose-built Boeing VC-25B aircraft arrive in 2028.

Joint Base Andrews, Md. — President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled a new interim presidential aircraft at Joint Base Andrews, marking a major step in modernizing Air Force One capabilities with a converted Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental originally gifted by the government of Qatar.
The aircraft, designated as a “VC-25B Bridge” plane, will serve as a secure flying command center for the president until two new purpose-built Boeing VC-25B aircraft arrive in 2028. After final modifications, testing, and painting in a bold new red, white, and blue livery, the jet is undergoing commissioning flights before entering active service.
The unveiling took place inside a hangar at the Maryland base, home to the Presidential Airlift Group. A crowd of several hundred Air Force personnel gathered as Trump toured the aircraft and praised its craftsmanship. “The workmanship of this plane is, when you see it, you won’t believe it,” the president said.
The 747-8, valued at approximately $400 million in its original luxury configuration, was formally accepted by the U.S. government from Qatar in 2025 as an unconditional gift. The Pentagon oversaw extensive modifications performed by contractors including L3Harris to bring it up to presidential transport standards. These upgrades include advanced secure communications systems, self-defense countermeasures, mid-air refueling capability, electromagnetic pulse protection, and other classified security features required for Air Force One operations.
Official estimates place the cost of these security and operational modifications at less than $400 million. The plane retains much of its original high-end interior layout while incorporating the necessary command-and-control infrastructure for presidential travel.
Its new exterior features a distinctive livery chosen by Trump, featuring a navy blue underbelly, a prominent red stripe, the presidential seal on the forward fuselage, and a large American flag on the vertical stabilizer. This bolder red-white-and-blue scheme replaces the traditional light blue and white design that has defined Air Force One since the Kennedy era. Similar updated markings are planned for other senior government aircraft.
The jet will operate alongside the remaining VC-25A aircraft until the two new VC-25B planes—also based on the 747-8 platform—are delivered. One of the aging VC-25As recently completed its final flight carrying President Trump back from Europe, closing out nearly four decades of service that began under President George H.W. Bush.
The project traces its roots to Trump’s first term, when he directed changes to the presidential aircraft’s appearance to reflect a more commanding national image. The Biden administration paused aspects of the effort citing costs and schedule risks before the current administration revived and advanced the initiative upon Trump’s return to office. The Qatar gift provided an expedited path to an interim solution amid delays in the primary Boeing contract.
Air Force officials described the aircraft as ready to provide critical, secure continuity for the commander in chief. It will begin operational flights this summer, with the possibility of an early high-profile mission under consideration, including potential use for presidential travel tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
The acceptance of the Qatari aircraft has drawn scrutiny over foreign gift rules and security implications of integrating a foreign-origin airframe into the presidential fleet. The Trump administration has maintained that the donation was unconditional, that all modifications and security hardening were performed domestically under strict oversight, and that the president has committed to donating the aircraft to his future presidential library foundation after leaving office rather than retaining personal use.
With the new livery and capabilities now on display, the interim Air Force One represents both a practical bridge solution and a visible symbol of the administration’s emphasis on a strong, distinctly American presidential presence in the skies. Commissioning flights will allow White House and Air Force teams to validate systems and protocols before full operational deployment.
The two permanent VC-25B aircraft remain on track for 2028 delivery, at which point the current fleet will transition and the Qatar-origin jet will move to its next chapter.
