WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump threatened Sunday to withdraw his endorsement and support a primary challenger against Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., after she defended Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and campaigned with him.
Trump posted on Truth Social that Boebert is “weak-minded” for backing Massie, whom he has repeatedly criticized as one of the most disloyal Republicans in Congress. He said if a strong alternative emerges, it would be his “honor” to pull his endorsement of Boebert and back a challenger in Colorado’s 4th District.
Boebert responded directly on X: “Yes, I saw the President’s post. No, I’m not mad or offended. I knew the risks when I agreed to stand by my friend Thomas Massie. I was, and will be, America First, America Always, and MAGA. Onward.”
The public exchange highlights growing tensions within the House Republican Conference between unwavering Trump loyalists and members who occasionally break ranks. Massie has opposed several Trump-backed spending measures and foreign aid packages, drawing repeated fire from the president.
Boebert, who flipped to Colorado’s more conservative 4th District in 2024 after a tough race in the 3rd, had enjoyed strong Trump support in recent cycles. A Trump-backed primary challenge in the solidly Republican district would pose a serious threat to her re-election.
No specific challenger has emerged, but Trump’s post signals he is serious about enforcing loyalty ahead of the 2026 midterms. Boebert has not indicated she will change her position on Massie.
