Trump Says Biden FBI Left Butler File “Altered or Gone”; New Records Show Crooks Used “Bob Dole” Alias

President Trump said Tuesday that the Biden-era FBI mishandled the Butler assassination investigation and that newly surfaced records should have been in the file before he took office.

President Donald Trump wrote Tuesday that the FBI under former President Joe Biden and former Director Christopher Wray failed on the July 13, 2024, attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania, and that “by the time I got into Office, on January 20th, most of the information was missing, altered, corrupted, or gone.”

“New info was just found! Why wasn’t it seen long ago?” Trump posted on Truth Social. “This was all a Democrat Plot, to get me out of the Election, that failed. Dirty Cop Christopher Wray should pay a price for the way he handled this assassination attempt, and certainly for the things he said.”

The post followed delivery of FBI records to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who has kept an open investigation into the Butler shooting. The New York Post first reported the documents. Fox News Digital reviewed them.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, then 20, fired from a rooftop about 150 yards from the stage. One round hit Trump in the ear. Another killed Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief in the stands with his family. Two other spectators were wounded. Crooks was killed on the roof.

The newly circulated file material does not announce a new official motive. It does fill in the gunman’s habits. Crooks used the alias “Bob Dole” to order and collect packages before his father came home from late shifts. Agents were told he had no friends through middle school and high school. After the shooting, an anonymous donor paid to have the body cremated.

Matthew Crooks, the father, told FBI interviewers he “never really had a father/son bond” with his son. He said that after the boy was born “he did not scream, and he was always quiet from that point on.” He also said he came to believe his son’s interest in firearms had “ulterior motives,” realized “the minute he pulled that trigger.” Days before the rally, the father told agents, a garage camera showed the younger Crooks pacing with “his arms going up and down … frantically talking and not making any sense.”

None of that answers why a 20-year-old from Bethel Park climbed a roof with a rifle. It does answer part of Trump’s question about the file. Package aliases, a paid cremation, and a father’s on-record account of pre-attack behavior are the kind of details a complete investigation would have had in 2024. Grassley’s committee is only now putting them in public view.

Wray left the bureau. Kash Patel is director. Trump’s charge is that the first investigation was not merely slow. He used the words “missing, altered, corrupted, or gone.” Those are allegations, not findings. They are also the president’s on-the-record description of how the most serious assassination attempt against him was handled by the government he defeated.
