Trump Names Stephen Miller White House Chief of Staff, Replacing Susie Wiles

President Donald Trump on Friday named Stephen Miller White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles effective Monday. Miller has served as deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser throughout the second term and previously as a senior adviser and speechwriter in the first term.

Trump described Miller as one of his most trusted advisers. The announcement followed Democrats’ gains of both the House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterms. Miller has driven the administration’s interior enforcement expansion, including daily arrest targets and operations that reached beyond those with serious criminal records.

Immigration hardliners welcomed the elevation. Former and current DHS officials and outside advocates described the move as confirming the continuation of expansive enforcement in the administration’s final two years. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin publicly called Miller a friend and an excellent choice.

Miller’s portfolio has included approval of executive orders and close monitoring of ICE and Border Patrol operations. Democrats have already signaled investigations into immigration enforcement once the new Congress convenes.

The change places the principal architect of the second-term crackdown at the center of West Wing operations as the White House prepares for divided government.
