Trump Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Iran: Reopen Strait of Hormuz or Face Strikes on Power Plants
In a Truth Social post on March 20, 2026, Trump stated: “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!”

President Donald Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz without threats or interference, warning that failure to comply would result in U.S. strikes on Iranian power plants.

The warning comes after weeks of Iranian actions that have effectively closed the critical waterway. Iranian officials, including senior Revolutionary Guard commanders, declared the strait “closed” in early March and threatened to attack any vessel attempting to pass. Iran has laid mines, launched drone and missile strikes on commercial tankers, and targeted energy infrastructure, disrupting roughly one-fifth of global oil trade.
Several ships have already been attacked or damaged in the strait and surrounding waters since late February, contributing to soaring energy prices and supply concerns for major importers.
Trump has repeatedly called on allied nations heavily dependent on Middle East oil to join a naval coalition to secure the waterway. He specifically urged China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom to deploy warships alongside U.S. forces. However, responses have been limited or negative: several NATO members and key partners have declined direct involvement, citing risks or a desire to avoid escalation. The U.K. has discussed options but stopped short of committing ships, while France and others have emphasized diplomatic solutions first.
The ultimatum reflects the administration’s frustration with Iran’s continued blockade despite ongoing U.S.-Israeli military operations under Operation Epic Fury. Trump has emphasized that the U.S. is prepared to act alone if necessary but prefers a coalition approach to restore safe passage quickly and stabilize global energy markets.
Iranian state media has not yet issued an official response to the 48-hour deadline.
