Trump Holds “Steel Across America” on the Ellipse; Closed-Press Orders Set for 1 p.m.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to appear at a Steel Across America event on the Ellipse at 10:35 a.m. ET Tuesday, according to White House daily guidance released Monday night. Pre-credentialed media are listed for the outdoor remarks south of the White House. The same schedule puts the president in the Oval Office at 1 p.m. for a closed-press executive-order signing, then closed-press policy meetings at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. He returned to Washington Monday evening from Bedminster. The Office of Communications listed NBC as in-town pool television and the Gateway Pundit as new media. The White House has not published the titles of the orders slated for 1 p.m. or a speaker list for the Ellipse event.

The timing falls on the morning Canada’s retaliatory duties took effect on U.S. steel, aluminum, furniture, clothing, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics — a $27.6 billion package Ottawa framed as matching Trump’s Aug. 22 Section 338 tariffs on Canadian goods. U.S. Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs already stand at 50 percent. A June 1 proclamation adjusted those metal regimes and offered a temporary 10 percent rate through the end of 2027 for capital equipment that is at least 85 percent U.S. melted-and-poured steel or smelted-and-cast aluminum by weight. The White House has said more than 4 million tons of new crude steelmaking capacity is due online in the next two years, including projects in West Virginia, Arkansas, and South Carolina. Hyundai-POSCO broke ground last week on a $5.8 billion electric-arc mill in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. U.S. Steel has said it will restart a Granite City, Illinois, blast furnace and hire about 400 workers. Trump approved Nippon Steel’s purchase of U.S. Steel in 2025 under a national-security agreement that includes a “golden share” giving the government consent rights over plant closures and certain investment cuts. United Steelworkers contracts covering more than 20,000 workers at U.S. Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs were extended 30 days while talks continue.

Trump has repeatedly described steel as a national-security industry. The administration used the golden-share authority last year to block an idle of Granite City processing. Canada’s new 50 percent counter-tariff on U.S. steel and aluminum products took effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday; goods in transit that day are exempt. No readout of Tuesday’s Oval orders or policy meetings had been issued before the Ellipse event. The public portion is the Steel Across America appearance.
