Trump Draws a Line: No Iran Strikes Before Nov. 3, Blockade Stays
Trump said the United States will not attack Iran before the Nov. 3 midterms. The naval blockade stays. A day earlier, Axios reported the Pentagon had told Centcom to finish strike options, with no start date.

President Trump said Thursday the United States will not attack Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, while the naval blockade of Iranian ports stays in place.
“We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he wrote on Truth Social. “I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both Economically and Militarily, and while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, with Oil flowing in Record Numbers of Barrels through the Hormuz Strait (22 Million Barrels, last night alone, with not one barrel coming from, or going to, Iran!), we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd. IRAN WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”
The post landed a day after reporting that the military had been told to finish strike options. Axios, citing U.S. officials, reported that the Pentagon instructed Central Command several days ago to complete preparations to resume major combat operations against Iran. The order set no start date. A Pentagon official told Axios that the department’s job is to develop and present military options to the president. U.S. and Israeli sources told the outlet that a new phase, if ordered, would focus on energy facilities, infrastructure, and nuclear targets, and that Israel would most likely take part. The Atlantic reported Wednesday that the White House had asked the Pentagon for limited strike options that could be used before the midterms, with a wider operation also under discussion for after the vote.
Oil moved on that reporting before the post. CNBC said Brent crude rose more than 4 percent Thursday to above $104 a barrel after Trump told reporters late Wednesday that renewed strikes were under consideration. After the Truth Social message, West Texas Intermediate fell from about $92.70 to about $90.50, FXStreet reported, and the S&P 500 cut an earlier loss.
The economic track did not pause with the strike pledge. The Treasury Department on Thursday sanctioned 17 vessels it said were part of the shadow fleet Iran has used to move oil. Trump’s post said the blockade “will remain in full force and effect” and that the 22 million barrels he cited moving through Hormuz overnight included none coming from or going to Iran. Outside analysts have disputed U.S. claims that strait volumes are back at prewar levels. The president did not address that dispute in the post.
Axios noted that Trump’s statements on Iran have not always matched the next move. In June 2025, before Operation Midnight Hammer, the White House said he would decide within two weeks whether to join Israel’s campaign. When he made that statement, the decision to strike Iran’s nuclear sites had already been made. Thursday’s post is narrower than a peace announcement. It sets a calendar: no attacks before Nov. 3, talks described as productive, the blockade left on, and a restated line that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.
