Trump Calls Alaska Ranked Choice Voting a “Scam,” Urges Voters to Repeal It
At a Wasilla rally for Sen. Dan Sullivan, the president endorsed Bernadette Wilson for governor and told the crowd to support the November ballot measure ending the state’s ranked-choice system.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday night in Wasilla, Alaska, called the state’s ranked-choice voting system a “scam” and urged voters to repeal it. Speaking at a rally for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, Trump said the system is a “phony rigged deal” in which “nobody knows what they’re doing” and described it as a “Dumocrat scam.”
“You got to get out, if for no other reason, you got to repeal rank choice. It’s a joke all over the country,” Trump told the crowd. He clarified that voters should support the ballot measure, meaning a “yes” vote to repeal. Alaska uses a top-four open primary followed by a ranked-choice general election. A similar repeal effort failed by a narrow margin in 2024.
Trump also endorsed Bernadette Wilson, the leading Republican in the August primary, for governor. He appeared alongside Sullivan and Rep. Nick Begich. The rally drew thousands to the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center; it was the first sitting-president event of its kind in the Mat-Su Valley. Protesters gathered along the Parks Highway.
Local reporting and the Washington Examiner covered the ranked-choice comments. Trump’s appearance is part of a series of midterm stops as Republicans work to hold the Senate.
