Trump-Backed Jake Gallrein Defeats Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky GOP Primary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., was decisively defeated Tuesday night in the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District by Trump-endorsed State Rep. Jake Gallrein, marking the latest high-profile victory for President Donald Trump in his campaign to remove Republicans he considers disloyal.

Gallrein, a strong Trump ally, won the solidly conservative district after Trump personally targeted Massie for months. The six-term incumbent had repeatedly broken with the administration on key votes, including opposition to major spending packages, foreign aid to Ukraine, and certain border security measures. Trump made it clear that Massie had to go.

In a Truth Social post earlier this year, Trump stated: “Thomas Massie is a disaster for the Republican Party and for our Country. He votes against everything we need… He must be primaried!” Trump later called Massie one of the “worst” members of Congress and actively campaigned for Gallrein in the final weeks.

Vice President JD Vance also weighed in sharply against Massie, saying on a podcast that the Kentucky congressman had become “more interested in being a contrarian than in actually getting things done for the American people.” Vance described Massie’s voting record as “frustrating” and said it was time for Kentucky to send someone who would support the Trump agenda.

Trump’s Enduring Influence

The result underscores the remarkable sway President Trump continues to hold over the Republican Party nearly halfway through his second term. While most second-term presidents see their political capital diminish, Trump’s personal endorsement — or public opposition — remains one of the most powerful forces in GOP primaries.

Trump has maintained extremely high approval ratings among Republican voters, allowing him to shape the party even without the formal powers of his first term. His recent track record includes:

  • Helping defeat Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana after Cassidy voted to convict Trump in the 2021 impeachment trial.
  • Backing successful challengers against other incumbents who opposed key administration priorities.
  • Delivering wins for his endorsed candidates in open-seat races across multiple states.

In Massie’s case, the congressman’s libertarian-leaning positions and willingness to vote against party leadership on fiscal and foreign policy issues made him a repeated target. Trump and his allies framed the primary as a referendum on loyalty to the “America First” agenda.

Gallrein, a former Marine and state lawmaker, campaigned heavily on full support for Trump’s policies on border security, energy production, and reducing government spending. He is now heavily favored to win the general election in November in the deeply Republican district.

The defeat of Massie sends a clear message to other House Republicans: crossing President Trump carries significant political risk. With the 2026 midterms approaching, several other members who have occasionally broken ranks are now watching closely as Trump continues to exert strong influence over the party’s direction.
