Trump Appoints FHFA Director Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence
The move follows Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation as DNI, effective June 30, 2026, citing her husband’s battle with cancer. Trump initially designated Principal Deputy DNI Aaron Lukas as acting director, but selected Pulte as the latest interim leader.

Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced on June 2, 2026, the appointment of William J. “Bill” Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), as Acting Director of National Intelligence. Pulte will retain his current FHFA role and chairmanship of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while overseeing the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI).
The move follows Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation as DNI, effective June 30, 2026, citing her husband’s battle with cancer. Trump initially designated Principal Deputy DNI Aaron Lukas as acting director, but selected Pulte as the latest interim leader.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated: “I am appointing the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, William J. Pulte, to serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence. William has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago.”
Pulte, 38, is a businessman and grandson of PulteGroup founder William Pulte. He founded Pulte Capital Partners, a private equity firm, and has led efforts in housing and community development, including The Blight Authority nonprofit. He was confirmed as FHFA Director in March 2025.
The ODNI coordinates 18 intelligence agencies. As acting director, Pulte does not require Senate confirmation. Trump praised Pulte’s financial oversight experience handling trillions in mortgage guarantees as preparation for managing sensitive national security matters.
The appointment drew mixed reactions. Supporters view Pulte as an outsider committed to America First priorities and rooting out entrenched bureaucracy. Critics question his lack of traditional intelligence or military background.
This marks the latest shift in the DNI position during Trump’s second term, reflecting efforts to install loyal, results-oriented leaders across key agencies. Pulte’s dual role underscores the administration’s focus on efficiency and cross-agency coordination.
