Trump Announces Nomination of Todd Blanche as Permanent Attorney General

Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced on June 3, 2026, that he will nominate Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to serve as the permanent Attorney General of the United States. Trump made the statement during a White House dinner, with formal nomination expected the following day.

“We are going to make him permanent attorney general,” Trump said, praising Blanche’s performance in the acting role.

Blanche, 51, has served as Acting Attorney General since April 2, 2026, after Trump removed Pam Bondi from the position. He previously held the role of Deputy Attorney General, confirmed by the Senate in March 2025.

A former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, Blanche later entered private practice and joined Trump’s legal defense team. He represented Trump in multiple criminal cases, including the New York hush money trial and federal prosecutions brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

As Acting Attorney General, Blanche has advanced several Trump administration priorities, including efforts to address perceived weaponization of the Justice Department, creation of a National Fraud Enforcement Division, and actions targeting violent crime. He recently withdrew a controversial proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund intended to compensate Trump allies after it faced bipartisan criticism.

Blanche began his career as a paralegal and later prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. He worked for over a decade as an Assistant U.S. Attorney before moving to private firms including WilmerHale and Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.

The nomination requires Senate confirmation. While some Republican senators have expressed support for a swift process, Democrats have signaled strong opposition, viewing Blanche as overly loyal to Trump. The announcement comes amid ongoing scrutiny of DOJ actions under his acting leadership.

This move solidifies Trump’s preference for trusted insiders in key law enforcement positions as his administration continues efforts to reshape federal agencies.
