The Trump administration informed Congress on Tuesday that it intends to admit up to 17,500 refugees in fiscal year 2027, with the slots going “primarily” to Afrikaners from South Africa.
The State Department notice, obtained by multiple outlets, states that white South Africans face seizures of their land and other forms of persecution and “will fully assimilate into the United States in a manner that preserves taxpayer resources.” The administration projects the resettlement cost at approximately $500 million. Fiscal year 2027 begins Oct. 1.
The South African government has repeatedly rejected the claim that Afrikaners constitute a persecuted minority. The notice continues a policy that has already resettled thousands of Afrikaners under a carve-out while the broader U.S. refugee program remains sharply limited compared with prior administrations.
Presidents set the annual refugee ceiling. The current notice frames the allocation as responsive to conditions in South Africa and consistent with assimilation priorities.
