Trump Administration Defers Another $1.2 Billion in California Medicaid Payments Amid Fraud Concerns
CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz announced the deferral of an additional $1.2 billion in California Medicaid personal-care payments during the Oval Office event unveiling the new fraud-whistleblower program.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said on October 20 that the Trump administration is deferring another $1.2 billion in California Medicaid payments directed toward personal-care services, citing questions about the program’s spending growth and potential fraud. The announcement came during the same Oval Office event in which President Trump and Vice President Vance launched the Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program.
Oz noted that tips from people inside businesses can help investigators identify wrongdoing and that the deferral is part of broader efforts to protect taxpayer dollars. California has faced repeated federal scrutiny over Medicaid and related benefit programs, including earlier actions tied to noncitizen eligibility and inflated claims. The latest hold adds to prior freezes and investigations into personal-care and related services.
The step aligns with the administration’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, chaired by Vance, which coordinates cross-agency work to strengthen eligibility checks and prevent improper payments. Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, the task force’s vice chairman, separately called for mandatory minimum prison terms for benefits fraud and civil liability for state officials who fail to stop fraud they could have prevented.
California officials have previously disputed the scale of federal fraud findings and characterized some enforcement actions as politically motivated. The deferred funds remain subject to further review; CMS has not released a detailed breakdown of the specific providers or claims involved in the latest $1.2 billion action.
