SIERRA BLANCA, Texas – Law enforcement officers fatally shot a man Wednesday after he fled a checkpoint, fired at pursuing vehicles and civilians during a 70-mile pursuit, and pointed a weapon at officers following a vehicle stop.

The incident began around 10:30 a.m. at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint on Interstate 10, about 90 miles east of El Paso. James Douglas McMillan, 33, of Greenfield, Wisconsin, was driving a stolen vehicle from Arizona when a drug-sniffing K-9 alerted agents, prompting a secondary inspection. McMillan sped away, initiating a chase involving U.S. Border Patrol, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Culberson County Sheriff’s Office, Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Border Patrol Tactical Unit.

During the pursuit, McMillan fired shots at pursuing vehicles and civilian cars. Authorities used a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver to stop his vehicle. McMillan barricaded himself inside and pointed his weapon at officers, who then fired, killing him at the scene. No law enforcement personnel or civilians were injured. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting to determine which agency fired the fatal shots, standard procedure for officer-involved incidents.

The vehicle was confirmed stolen, and McMillan's actions underscore ongoing challenges at border checkpoints aimed at intercepting drugs and threats.

This event highlights the risks faced by border agents amid heightened security measures under President Trump's administration, which has prioritized enforcement to curb illegal crossings and smuggling.
