Supreme Court Agrees to Review Missouri Redistricting Map for Third Time as Early Voting Begins

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed late Tuesday to review for a third time in a month which congressional map Missouri must use for the Nov. 3 election, after the 8th Circuit ruled the state must employ the Republican-drawn 2025 7–1 plan.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh directed Secretary of State Denny Hoskins and two congressional candidates to file their arguments by Wednesday afternoon. Advocates for the 2022 map, including the group People Not Politicians, told the justices that the circuit ruling “demands a new map after votes have already been cast.” Absentee and early voting under the 2022 lines began Tuesday; ballots have been printed and mailed.

The 8th Circuit panel held that switching maps between the August primary and the general election violates the Constitution and ordered a permanent injunction barring any map other than the 2025 plan, then stayed its own order until Sept. 28 to allow Supreme Court review. The justices had twice previously left standing the Missouri Supreme Court’s rejection of the 2025 lines.

Election officials remain under the earlier stay pending further action. The case now sits before the high court with early voting already underway and the general election six weeks away.
