Steve Hilton Leads Early Returns in California Gubernatorial Primary
With roughly 57% of expected votes counted, Hilton held approximately 27.8% support, narrowly ahead of former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra at 25.4%. Billionaire activist Tom Steyer trailed in third with 19.6%.

Sacramento, CA – Republican Steve Hilton surged to the lead in early results from California’s June 2, 2026, top-two primary for governor, positioning him as a strong contender to advance to the November general election against a Democrat.
With roughly 57% of expected votes counted, Hilton held approximately 27.8% support, narrowly ahead of former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra at 25.4%. Billionaire activist Tom Steyer trailed in third with 19.6%.
Hilton, a former Fox News host, adviser to UK Prime Minister David Cameron, and vocal Trump supporter, ran on a platform to cut taxes, reduce regulations, build more housing, and lower gas prices by suspending environmental rules. He received President Trump’s endorsement in April 2026.
The crowded primary featured over 60 candidates. Other notable contenders included Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (Republican), former Rep. Katie Porter (Democrat), and Los Angeles-area officials. No candidate approached the 50% needed to win outright, ensuring a November runoff between the top two finishers.
Early results indicate strong dissatisfaction with one-party Democratic rule under termed-out Gov. Gavin Newsom. Hilton’s performance reflects Republican momentum in the state, fueled by issues like high housing costs, crime, homelessness, and energy prices.
Hilton addressed supporters Tuesday night: “This is the first stage, but the fight really starts tomorrow.” He vowed to continue pushing conservative reforms if he advances.
Final certification of results is expected in coming weeks as remaining ballots are tallied. The November matchup will likely pit Hilton against Becerra or Steyer in what could be California’s most competitive gubernatorial race in years.
