Speaker Johnson Predicts Republicans Will Expand House Majority in 2026 Midterms
Johnson highlighted gains from new maps in Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, and North Carolina, which he said have created a significantly more favorable playing field.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson said Republicans are well-positioned to grow their majority in the House during the 2026 midterm elections, citing favorable redistricting outcomes and strong voter support for President Trump’s agenda.
In an interview with Newsmax’s Todd Starnes, Johnson expressed confidence that the GOP will not only hold the House but expand its narrow majority. He pointed to recent Republican-led redistricting efforts in multiple states as a major structural advantage heading into next year’s elections.
Johnson highlighted gains from new maps in Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, and North Carolina, which he said have created a significantly more favorable playing field. These changes, enabled in part by the Supreme Court’s recent narrowing of the Voting Rights Act, are expected to deliver a net pickup of five to eight seats for Republicans from redistricting alone.
The Speaker emphasized that Republicans have a strong contrast to present to voters: concrete results on border security, energy production, inflation reduction, and government efficiency versus the failures of one-party Democratic rule in many cities and states. He noted rising enthusiasm among the Republican base and increasing support from working-class and minority voters drawn to Trump’s policies.
Johnson acknowledged that midterms are historically difficult for the president’s party but argued that this cycle is different due to the intensity of Trump’s support and the party’s unified focus on delivering for the American people. He dismissed concerns about internal divisions, stating that while healthy debate exists, the conference remains largely aligned behind the president’s priorities.
The comments come as Republicans hold a slim House majority and prepare for what many view as a critical election cycle. Johnson’s optimism reflects growing confidence within the party that redistricting advantages, combined with sustained public support for the Trump administration’s early agenda, could lead to a strengthened majority after the midterms.
