U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina passed away Saturday evening at age 71 after a brief and sudden illness, his office announced. Graham, a longtime Republican lawmaker and one of President Donald Trump's closest congressional allies, served in the Senate since 2003 and was seeking a fifth term. His office stated that he died after a short illness and asked for privacy for his family during this difficult time.

Graham's career spanned decades in public service, beginning with his time in the U.S. Air Force as a lawyer and Reserve officer. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994 before moving to the Senate. Known as a national security hawk, Graham advocated for a strong U.S. military, robust alliances with democratic nations, and an assertive American role on the global stage. He frequently traveled abroad to support U.S. interests, including multiple visits to Ukraine since Russia's invasion, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In recent years, Graham forged a close relationship with President Trump after initially running against him in the 2016 Republican presidential primary. Despite occasional differences, particularly after January 6, 2021, Graham became one of Trump's most consistent supporters in Congress, advising on foreign policy matters involving Iran, Russia, and other hotspots. He played a key role in advancing legislation during Trump's second term, including as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.

President Trump reacted to the news on social media, calling Graham "one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known" and a "true American Patriot." Trump noted that Graham was always working and would be greatly missed. Senate Majority Leader John Thune described Graham as a dedicated public servant whose military and congressional service took him around the world. Thune highlighted Graham's belief in America's might to do good and his lifelong commitment to that cause.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Graham a great friend of Israel and a cherished personal friend, noting that Graham viewed U.S. and Israeli security as inseparable. Netanyahu said Graham devoted his career to strengthening the alliance between the two nations.

Graham was never married and had no children. His sister, Darline Graham Nordone, whom he helped raise after their parents died, is his closest surviving relative. At the time of his death, Graham had recently returned from international travel and was active in Senate work, including efforts on sanctions targeting Russia.

The senator's passing comes during a critical period for Republicans, who hold a narrow Senate majority. Under South Carolina law, Republican Governor Henry McMaster will appoint a temporary replacement to serve until a special election. McMaster called Graham irreplaceable, describing him as a fierce fighter for South Carolina and America.

Graham's death marks the end of a prominent career that influenced U.S. foreign policy for over two decades. His advocacy for a muscular approach to national security, support for allies like Israel and Ukraine, and close partnership with President Trump defined much of his later tenure. As the GOP navigates midterm elections and ongoing legislative priorities, Graham's absence leaves a notable void in the Senate's conservative ranks.
