BEIJING — U.S. Secret Service agents and Chinese security officials engaged in a tense, nearly 30-minute standoff Thursday at Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven after Chinese authorities refused to allow an armed Secret Service agent to enter the secure compound with the presidential press pool.

The confrontation occurred during President Donald Trump’s state visit while he and Chinese President Xi Jinping toured the UNESCO World Heritage site. Chinese security insisted the agent disarm before proceeding, citing strict local protocol that prohibits foreign armed personnel in the area. The U.S. side refused to leave the agent behind or disarm him, as Secret Service protective procedures require armed agents to remain with the president and the accompanying press pool at all times.

Reporters on the ground described heated arguments and physical tension between the two security teams. The delay held up the White House press pool’s entry to the temple complex. After roughly 30 minutes of negotiations, the sides reached a compromise: another Secret Service agent who had already cleared Chinese security protocols was brought forward to escort the reporters inside, while the original agent remained outside.

Watch:

The incident did not alter Trump’s official schedule or delay his meetings with Xi. No injuries or further escalation were reported.

The standoff highlights recurring friction over security protocols during high-level U.S. presidential visits to China, where Beijing maintains tight control over armed access. Similar minor clashes involving U.S. delegation members and Chinese officials were noted at other events during the trip, including press pool access to motorcades, but the Temple of Heaven incident was the most prolonged.

The event took place on the first full day of Trump’s two-day summit, which included formal ceremonies, bilateral talks on trade, Taiwan, the Iran conflict, and technology issues, followed by a state banquet. Trump later described the overall visit as productive despite the behind-the-scenes security friction.
