Republicans Quietly Courting Sen. John Fetterman to Switch Parties or Go Independent
Fetterman has not fully closed the door on the idea. When a senior Republican recently suggested he become an independent, he “absorbed the suggestion and didn’t embrace or reject the overture.”

WASHINGTON — Republicans are mounting a quiet but determined effort to persuade Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) to switch parties or become an independent who caucuses with them, according to a Politico report published May 4, 2026.
The outreach has intensified as Fetterman finds himself increasingly isolated within the Democratic Party due to his breaks with party leadership on issues such as border security, strong support for Israel, backing of certain Trump nominees, and government funding bills. According to Politico, President Donald Trump has personally pushed the idea, offering Fetterman a “total and complete endorsement” and a significant financial windfall if he runs as a Republican. Trump relayed this message through Fox News host Sean Hannity, instructing him to tell Fetterman he would “win big.”
A handful of Senate Republicans, particularly Sens. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) and Katie Britt (R-Ala.), along with their spouses, have developed close personal relationships with Fetterman and his wife Gisele. These friendships have become a key channel for the GOP’s overtures. Fetterman has been spending more time in the Senate Republican cloakroom during votes and has grown comfortable with several GOP colleagues.
Fetterman has not fully closed the door on the idea. When a senior Republican recently suggested he become an independent, he “absorbed the suggestion and didn’t embrace or reject the overture,” according to a GOP official. In a direct interview with Politico, however, Fetterman stated firmly: “I’m not changing. I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one.” He also described himself as a “shitty Republican” due to his positions on abortion rights, gay rights, legalizing marijuana, and labor issues.
Republicans see potential leverage if Democrats gain a narrow Senate majority in the 2026 midterms. Fetterman himself has referenced the scenario, noting he could become the pivotal 51st vote. Top Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have largely avoided public comment on the possibility, with Schumer telling Politico he is “not commenting on that.”
The quiet campaign reflects Republicans’ concern over their slim Senate majority and Fetterman’s growing independence from Democratic orthodoxy. While he continues to vote with Democrats about 93% of the time, his public persona and key policy breaks have made him a target for recruitment.
No formal offer has been extended, and Fetterman has given no indication he is ready to leave the Democratic Party. The situation remains fluid as Republicans continue their low-key outreach.
