FRANKFORT, Ky. — U.S. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., is seriously considering a bid for Kentucky governor in 2027, telling local media he expects to make a final decision around December and has already begun traveling the state to gauge support.

Comer, chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, confirmed the move in recent interviews, saying he is “very seriously considering” the race for the open seat. Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear is term-limited and cannot seek re-election in 2027.

The western Kentucky congressman ran for governor once before, in the 2015 Republican primary. He narrowly lost to Matt Bevin by just 83 votes, finishing second in a crowded field. Comer went on to win a special election to Congress in 2016 and has represented Kentucky’s 1st District ever since.

As Oversight chairman, Comer has led high-profile investigations into the Biden family’s business dealings, COVID-19 origins, and federal agency accountability. He has built a national profile as one of the most aggressive Republican investigators in Congress.

Kentucky remains a reliably Republican state at the federal level, but the governorship has flipped between parties in recent cycles. Beshear, a moderate Democrat, won re-election in 2023 by a surprisingly wide margin in a state that backed Donald Trump by nearly 20 points in 2024.

Comer has not formally declared his candidacy, but sources close to him say he is actively laying groundwork, including conversations with key GOP donors and local leaders across the state. A 2027 run would require him to forgo re-election to Congress in 2026.

No other major Republican candidates have emerged yet, though several names have been floated in Frankfort political circles. Democrats are expected to field a strong candidate to defend the seat.

Comer’s potential entry would make the 2027 governor’s race one of the most closely watched contests in the South, especially as Republicans look to maintain momentum from recent redistricting gains and the Trump administration’s policy agenda.
