WASHINGTON — Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) announced his resignation from Congress on April 13, 2026, amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and assault.

Swalwell, who has served since 2013, cited mounting calls for expulsion and an active House Ethics Committee probe launched the same day. He stated: “I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me.” He added that remaining in office would distract from constituent duties.

Four women, including a former staffer hired at age 21, accused Swalwell of misconduct ranging from sexual harassment to rape, according to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN. The former staffer alleged that in 2019, after drinks, she woke up naked in a hotel room with him and felt effects of nonconsensual intercourse. In 2024, at a New York City charity gala, he assaulted her while she was heavily intoxicated; she said she pushed him off saying “no,” but he did not stop, leaving her bruised and bleeding.

Other women reported unsolicited nude photos and explicit messages. The Manhattan DA opened a criminal investigation into the 2024 incident. Over 50 former staffers called for his resignation. Swalwell denies the serious claims as false but acknowledged past “mistakes in judgment.”

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) retracted support and called for expulsion, stating the women “deserve to be believed.” Bipartisan pressure intensified.

Swalwell plans to work with staff for a smooth transition in California’s 14th District.
