Rep. Al Green Defeated in Texas Democratic Primary

HOUSTON — Veteran Democratic Congressman Al Green lost his primary election Tuesday in Texas’s 9th Congressional District, bringing an end to his two-decade career in the U.S. House.

Green, 78, was defeated by a challenger who ran on a platform emphasizing criminal justice reform, affordable housing, and greater focus on local economic issues in the heavily Democratic southwest Houston district. The challenger successfully portrayed Green as out of touch after 20 years in office and criticized his heavy emphasis on national impeachment efforts and partisan rhetoric over constituent services and tangible results in the district.

Green, first elected in 2004, has been one of the most outspoken critics of President Donald Trump, repeatedly pushing for his impeachment and serving as a leading voice on progressive causes in Congress. While his staunch liberal record earned him strong support from national Democratic organizations, it appears to have left him vulnerable to accusations of neglecting local priorities such as infrastructure, crime reduction, and job creation.

The 9th District remains one of the safest Democratic seats in Texas, meaning the winner of the primary is overwhelmingly favored to win the general election in November. Final vote totals and certification are expected in the coming weeks.

Green has not yet issued a public statement on his loss. His defeat marks one of the more notable upsets in this cycle’s Democratic primaries, reflecting growing restlessness among some voters in deep-blue urban districts who are seeking newer, more locally focused leadership.

The outcome highlights shifting dynamics within the Democratic Party, where long-serving incumbents are increasingly facing credible challenges from the left, even in districts drawn to heavily favor Democrats. Green’s loss is the latest example of incumbents struggling to maintain support amid demands for fresh representation.
