Qatari-Gifted Boeing 747 Set to Enter Service as Air Force One by U.S. 250th Anniversary

WASHINGTON — The Boeing 747-8 aircraft gifted by Qatar to the United States is scheduled to enter service as a presidential aircraft in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026, according to U.S. Air Force officials.

The luxury wide-body jet, originally configured as a VIP transport for the Qatari royal family, was formally transferred to the U.S. government earlier this year. After extensive modifications, security upgrades, and testing at a U.S. facility, the aircraft is undergoing final certification to meet stringent Air Force One standards, including advanced communication systems, defensive countermeasures, and aerial refueling capability.

The gift strengthens diplomatic ties between the United States and Qatar. President Donald Trump has welcomed the aircraft as a significant contribution, noting it will serve as a capable interim or supplemental presidential aircraft while the long-delayed Boeing VC-25B replacement program continues.

The current pair of VC-25A Air Force One aircraft are aging 747-200 models that entered service in the early 1990s. The modern 747-8 provides greater capacity, updated avionics, and improved efficiency as a bridge solution.

U.S. Air Force officials confirmed the plane will be fully operational and available for presidential use by July 2026, coinciding with major quincentennial events marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The aircraft is expected to be officially redesignated and integrated into the presidential fleet later this year. It will undergo rigorous operational testing to ensure full compliance with all security and performance requirements before regular service.

This marks a rare instance of a foreign government gifting a major strategic asset to the United States. The development allows the presidential airlift fleet to maintain robust capabilities during the transition to the next-generation VC-25B aircraft.
