President Donald Trump travels to the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, on July 7-8, 2026, for discussions on alliance priorities including defense investment, transatlantic production, and Ukraine support. The gathering at the Beştepe Presidential Complex marks the 36th NATO Summit and Turkey’s first hosting since 2004.

Trump arrives Tuesday and meets Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan before the main sessions. He also plans a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following his July 4 calls with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin on potential Ukraine settlements. Reports indicate talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as well.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte highlighted three core focuses: boosting allied defense spending, strengthening defense industry cooperation, and sustaining Ukraine aid. These align with Trump’s emphasis on equitable burden-sharing, where European members increase contributions to deter threats like Russia without disproportionate U.S. costs. Many allies have raised budgets toward or beyond the 2% GDP target, with discussions shifting to higher ambitions and implementation.

Trump’s approach promotes a stronger “NATO 3.0” with greater European self-reliance while the U.S. maintains core commitments. On Ukraine, the summit addresses assistance and long-term security, with Trump pushing for negotiated resolutions over open-ended aid. A dedicated defense industry forum on July 7 aims to enhance production capacity and reduce dependencies. Turkey’s role in Black Sea stability will also feature.

Allies have expressed some caution over Trump’s past criticisms and rhetoric, yet data shows rising European spending partly from prior U.S. pressure. The summit offers a chance to demonstrate concrete results on spending, production, and pragmatic Ukraine strategies that prioritize American interests and alliance accountability.

Productive bilaterals, especially with Erdoğan, could advance defense cooperation including potential sales. Overall, Trump’s engagement seeks to reinforce NATO through fair contributions and peace-through-strength diplomacy rather than endless commitments.
