President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving Washington “permanent control over security, and all other needs,” on the Arctic island. He posted the announcement on Truth Social and called it an “‘Infinite Life’ Agreement” with “NO COST to the United States.” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the same pact is expected to be signed next week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York and still needs parliamentary approval in Copenhagen and Nuuk. No territory is being transferred.

“The United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns,” Trump wrote. “At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America.” He added that “no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval,” and that the United States would “immediately begin” developing “a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland.” He also wrote that Greenland “will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America.”

A State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss terms, said the text grants the United States permanent access, basing, and overflight rights and would remain in force even if Greenland later becomes independent. The official said it “guarantees that China and Russia cannot have a base in Greenland, they cannot send troops to Greenland, and the necessary mechanisms are in place to prevent investment in sensitive sectors.” Only the United States and its allies would be allowed to make those unspecified sensitive investments. Parties had also discussed using Greenlandic territory for elements of the administration’s Golden Dome missile-defense project, people familiar with the talks told Reuters. The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base under a 1951 defense agreement with Denmark that had no expiration date. The new text expands those rights and adds an investment screen aimed at Beijing and Moscow.

Frederiksen said the agreement “strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area” and “at the same time recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.” Greenland Foreign Minister Múte Bourup Egede said a deal that would strengthen security for the United States, Greenland, and their allies was “within reach.” A joint Danish-Greenlandic statement said signing is expected next week in New York and that the pact remains subject to formal approval in both parliaments. Reuters had reported earlier Friday that negotiators were closing in on an expanded U.S. military presence that would stop short of U.S. ownership of the island. Trump had pressed for a far larger American role after earlier talk of acquiring Greenland outright. The documents have not been published. Signing and the two parliamentary votes are the next steps on the calendar.
