July 20, 2025 - On July 19, 2025, an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was shot in the face and arm during an apparent robbery attempt at Fort Washington Park in Manhattan, New York City, just before midnight. The officer, aged 42, is in stable condition at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident involved two suspects, one of whom, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a Dominican national, was identified as an illegal alien previously released into the U.S. by the Biden administration.

DHS reported that Mora Nunez was apprehended by Border Patrol on April 4, 2023, near San Luis, Arizona, but was subsequently released. He had prior arrests for felony second- and third-degree assault and a kidnapping warrant from Massachusetts, with a deportation order issued as early as 2003. The second suspect remains at large, with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) leading the ongoing investigation.

Surveillance footage released by DHS shows two individuals arriving on a motorized scooter near the park. One suspect dismounted and approached the officer on an embankment before opening fire, after which both fled on the scooter. The officer returned fire during the confrontation, though it is unclear if the suspects were injured. One suspect was apprehended, but further details on their identity have not been disclosed.

Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary, highlighted the suspect’s criminal history and prior deportation order, raising concerns about border security policies under the Biden administration. The incident has sparked renewed debate over immigration enforcement, with some critics pointing to the release of individuals with criminal records as a significant public safety risk.

The NYPD and DHS are collaborating to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, with no additional suspects identified at this time. The officer’s identity has not been released, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. This incident follows a series of reported attacks on federal immigration facilities, underscoring heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement.
