Obama Claims Motive of WHCD Shooter Still Unknown Despite Manifesto Targeting Trump Officials

WASHINGTON — Former President Barack Obama claimed on April 26, 2026, that details about the motive behind the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting remained unclear, even though the accused gunman’s manifesto explicitly outlined his intent to target Trump administration officials.

In a post on X, Obama wrote: “Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all of us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy.” He added praise for the Secret Service, noting it was “a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day.”

The statement came one day after 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen opened fire at a security checkpoint outside the Washington Hilton ballroom. Allen sent a 1,052-word manifesto to family members roughly 10 minutes before the attack, in which he identified himself as the “Friendly Federal Assassin” and declared his targets were “Administration officials (not including Mr. Patel): they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest.” The document contained repeated anti-Trump grievances, anti-Christian rhetoric, and mocked the Secret Service’s security measures at the event.

The manifesto was quickly obtained and reported by multiple outlets, including the New York Post and CBS News, and referenced by President Trump and law enforcement officials in public statements the night of the incident.

Conservatives reacted sharply to Obama’s comments. Many called the statement “gaslighting” or willful denial of the manifesto’s clear political motive. Trump and his allies highlighted the document’s explicit targeting of administration officials and its anti-Christian elements as evidence of a politically driven attack. Critics accused Obama of downplaying the shooter’s stated intent to shield the narrative from political implications.

The FBI continues to investigate Allen’s background, digital footprint, and possible connections, but has not yet filed additional charges beyond firearm and assault counts. Allen remains in custody and is not cooperating with investigators.

The incident forced the evacuation of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior officials. The dinner was canceled and will be rescheduled within the next 30 days.
