Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that the department has flagged more than 300,000 noncitizens on state voter rolls, an increase from a July figure of roughly 250,000 identified in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. He made the comments in interviews with Newsmax and Fox News in the days before the November 3 midterms.

“We can get access to the information. And that’s how we found the 250,000. That number is actually pushed north of 300,000,” Mullin said. The department is working with the Justice Department and comparing names against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services records. “We can tell if they’re registered to vote, if they’re legally in this country or not,” he added. He noted that the records typically arrive after ballots are cast, so the department cannot yet determine how many of the flagged individuals actually voted.

Mullin said DHS has more than 1,600 investigations open and more than 100 convictions so far. In a separate Fox appearance he discussed the broader effort, criticizing sanctuary policies as creating environments that facilitate criminal activity. Earlier this year the department had sent letters to the four states urging cooperation on the preliminary findings.

The administration has pursued parallel actions, including criminal charges against noncitizens for illegal voting or registration in multiple states and requests that certain states sequester ballots linked to flagged individuals. Noncitizen voting in federal elections is prohibited by federal law.
