Melania Trump Brokers Localized Ceasefire in Russian-Occupied Ukrainian City of Oleshky
First Lady Melania Trump has brokered a temporary, localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky so humanitarian aid can enter and elderly residents can evacuate, the White House announced Friday. Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed the arrangement.

First Lady Melania Trump has secured a temporary, localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky to allow humanitarian aid and civilian evacuations, according to a White House statement released Friday.
The White House said both nations agreed to temporarily stop all military action in Oleshky so that aid can enter and residents can evacuate through a designated safe passageway. Melania Trump and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms, with her office describing her role as the agreement’s “exclusive intermediary.” The ceasefire is scheduled to begin on October 29, though some Russian and Ukrainian statements referenced a halt in firing beginning October 27.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” Melania Trump said in the statement. “Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible.”
Non-military civilian leaders from both countries are to visit residents in their homes to assess needs. Those who wish to leave will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. “I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” she said. An American media organization will accompany the teams to document the process; Newsmax reported it had been granted exclusive access.
Oleshky, located across the Dnipro River from Kherson, has been under Russian occupation since February 2022. Its pre-war population of roughly 24,000 has declined to an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 people, primarily elderly residents and about 50 children, according to the White House. About 90 percent of the city was flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam. Ukrainian officials have said supply routes for food and medicine have been blocked.
Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, who led negotiations on the Ukrainian side, thanked Melania Trump and her team for coordinating the effort. Ukrainian parliamentary official David Arakhamia also credited Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV for their roles in the process. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed her involvement in the humanitarian operation. President Donald Trump told reporters the ceasefire was “her initiative” and that both sides wanted to do it.
Marc Beckman, a senior adviser to the first lady, disclosed the agreement on Newsmax, stating that representatives of both countries had signed it hours earlier and describing it as a significant humanitarian step. The White House said the effort followed discussions initiated after Melania Trump learned of the conditions during an event tied to the United Nations General Assembly. The localized arrangement does not address broader fighting elsewhere in Ukraine.
