Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will detail President Trump’s “Economic D-Day” plan Monday, pairing the naval blockade with the toughest sanctions ever to isolate Iran and any country or company still providing it a financial lifeline.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will hold a press conference Monday to outline the details of President Donald Trump’s planned “Economic D-Day” campaign against Iran, an effort the administration describes as the most coordinated economic isolation in history aimed at collapsing the regime’s ability to sustain itself.

Bessent said the United States will pair its existing naval blockade with what he called the toughest sanctions ever imposed. The measures will target not only Iran but any country, bank, or company that continues to provide a lifeline through oil purchases, financial transfers, or ship-to-ship operations. Allies will be told they are either with the United States or against it, he said in interviews this week, adding that the Treasury Department will apply its full enforcement power against those that persist in doing business with Tehran. The secretary argued the combination of blockade and sanctions has worked in other cases and will force a decision on China and other major buyers of Iranian oil. He suggested maximum economic pressure could reduce the likelihood of a large-scale resumption of military operations, at least for now.

The announcement follows Trump’s declaration of an Economic D-Day, framing the campaign as a way to isolate Iran after months of strikes and a naval blockade that have not produced a diplomatic or military resolution. Bessent is expected to provide operational specifics on Monday, including secondary consequences for enablers.

Iran has denounced the coming economic measures as economic terrorism that would harm ordinary citizens and has previously vowed a devastating response to U.S. actions. The dual developments—detailed economic isolation plans and updated human costs—highlight the administration’s shift toward squeezing Iran’s finances while the conflict’s toll on American forces continues to accumulate. Bessent’s Monday briefing is expected to make clear how the United States intends to enforce the isolation and what it will demand of partners.
