ICE Arrests Nigerian Overstay DHS Links to a Pennsylvania House Campaign

The department said the man pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after allegedly exposing himself, and that he had been canvassing for Democrat Janelle Stelson. Her campaign said it never employed him.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested a Nigerian national the Department of Homeland Security said was working as a canvasser for the Democratic nominee in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District, the department said Wednesday.

DHS identified him as Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe. ICE arrested him last week after he pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct tied to an incident last month in which he allegedly exposed himself in public. The department said he was canvassing for Janelle Stelson, who is running for the Harrisburg-area seat, at the time of that incident.

“It’s unbelievable that Janelle Stelson would employ an illegal alien to work on a congressional campaign, let alone a pervert who exposed himself in public,” ICE Deputy Director Charles Wall said. “Every single day, the men and women of DHS are working hard to target and remove dangerous illegal aliens like this sicko from our communities. The Trump Administration will always put the safety of the American people first.”

Stelson’s campaign denied any tie to him. “This individual is not and has never been employed by the Janelle Stelson campaign,” campaign manager Alma Baker said. “If he is an illegal immigrant who committed a crime he should be deported. We never heard of him prior to the news of his arrest.”

DHS said Igbojekwe was lawfully admitted in June 2017 and remained after his authorized stay expired in 2019. The Biden administration granted him deferred action in 2021. Deferred action is not a green card and not citizenship. It is a decision not to remove someone for a period of time. His arrest follows a guilty plea, not a new visa overstay charge filed in the DHS statement.

Pennsylvania’s 10th is held by Republican Rep. Scott Perry. Stelson, a former television anchor, is the Democratic nominee in a race both parties have treated as competitive heading into the Nov. 3 midterms. The campaign’s denial leaves open whether Igbojekwe was paid by the campaign, paid by a vendor, or volunteering under a name the campaign says it does not recognize. DHS asserted he was working as a canvasser for Stelson. The campaign asserted he was never an employee and was unknown to them before the arrest.

ICE did not, in the statement summarized by Just the News, say where he is being held or when a removal hearing will be set.
