WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to end the partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security and provide full-year funding for the agency, including robust support for ICE and border security operations.
The bill passed along largely party lines after weeks of Democratic obstruction in the Senate that had kept DHS in a partial shutdown since mid-February 2026 — the longest such shutdown in U.S. history. Democrats blocked full funding unless immigration enforcement and ICE operations were stripped or severely limited, forcing more than 35,000 DHS employees, including TSA officers, Coast Guard civilians, and cybersecurity personnel, to work without pay for over two months.
House Republicans had repeatedly passed clean funding bills to reopen the department and pay all personnel, but Senate Democrats filibustered or rejected measures that included money for border enforcement. The latest House vote sends a clear message that national security and immigration enforcement will no longer be held hostage.
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where Republicans are working to secure passage and end the shutdown permanently. President Trump has called the Democrat-led obstruction “callous” and a direct threat to public safety.
The House action marks a long-overdue step toward restoring full operations and securing the border.
