Gunshots Near White House Result in Suspect Killed, Bystander Injured

WASHINGTON — A shooting incident near the White House around 6 p.m. Saturday prompted a full lockdown of the complex after 20-30 gunshots erupted near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, resulting in the death of the suspect and injury to a bystander.

According to the Secret Service and D.C. Metropolitan Police, the suspect approached a security checkpoint, pulled a weapon from his bag, and opened fire. Secret Service officers returned fire immediately, striking the suspect. The White House grounds were locked down as agents swept the area. President Trump was inside the residence at the time and was not in danger.

The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best. He was transported to George Washington University Hospital where he later died. Best had a documented history of prior attempts to infiltrate the White House, including a July 2025 arrest where he ignored commands, claimed he was Jesus Christ, and was issued a pretrial stay-away order. He had law enforcement contacts and mental health concerns.

One bystander was struck by a bullet and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No Secret Service officers were hurt. The investigation is ongoing with FBI assistance; Best is believed to have acted alone. No other suspects are being sought.

This marks the third gunfire incident near President Trump in the past month, following events at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in April and near the Washington Monument in early May. The White House remained on heightened alert for several hours. Journalists inside reported hearing the shots and taking cover.
