Graham’s Sister Darline Nordone Appointed to Finish Senate Term
Nordone expressed gratitude, stating it was an honor and that she would carry on her brother’s legacy.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to complete his unexpired Senate term. Nordone will be sworn in Wednesday, becoming the first woman to represent the state in the U.S. Senate. The appointment fills the vacancy following Graham’s sudden death at age 71.
Nordone expressed gratitude, stating it was an honor and that she would carry on her brother’s legacy. Graham had raised her after their parents died young and served as her legal guardian. She frequently appeared at his side during political events and campaigns.
The term expires in January, with a special election process underway. South Carolina law triggers a one-week filing period for a special primary starting July 21, followed by a primary on August 11 and potential runoff on August 25. The winner will campaign for the November 3 general election.
Graham’s passing has sparked interest among ambitious conservatives. Potential contenders include Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Reps. Nancy Mace, Russell Fry, and others. Businessman Mark Lynch and former Gov. Mark Sanford are also mentioned. Rep. Joe Wilson reaffirmed his focus on the House to preserve the slim GOP majority.
Democrat Annie Andrews, who won her party’s nomination, called for unity in honoring Graham’s service. The seat has long been Republican-held, with Graham winning by double digits in recent cycles.
McMaster described Nordone’s appointment as fitting given the family’s closeness. Her temporary role may position her as a contender in the special election, though the field is expected to be competitive.
Graham’s death leaves Republicans navigating a narrow Senate majority during a pivotal period. Nordone’s service ensures continuity in the short term as the state prepares for the full election cycle.
