Graham Platner Wins Maine Democratic Senate Nomination Despite Past Controversies

Augusta, ME – Socialist Graham Platner has secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Maine on June 9, 2026, defeating former Governor Janet Mills and other challengers to set up a general election matchup against longtime Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

Platner prevailed with strong grassroots support and endorsements from national progressives including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. He campaigned on Medicare for All, breaking up health care monopolies, aggressive wealth taxes on billionaires, strengthening labor unions, affordable housing, and ending U.S. involvement in what he calls “pointless wars.” His populist message resonated with voters frustrated by economic pressures in rural and coastal Maine.

The victory came despite a series of damaging revelations that emerged during the campaign. Platner faced scrutiny over old Reddit posts from 2009-2021 in which he identified as a “communist,” referred to police as “bastards,” and made disparaging comments about rural white Americans. He attributed some of the posts to struggles with PTSD following multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Additional controversies included reports from multiple women who dated him describing unsettling, demeaning, or emotionally volatile behavior, along with allegations of heavy drinking and infidelity during his marriage. Platner has acknowledged past relationship difficulties while disputing some characterizations. He also addressed a chest tattoo resembling a Nazi-era Totenkopf symbol, stating he and fellow Marines received it unaware of its historical associations during leave in 2007 and later covered it.

Despite the issues, Platner maintained momentum, with Gov. Janet Mills suspending her campaign in late April. He positioned himself as an outsider challenging the political establishment, criticizing corporate influence in the Democratic Party and emphasizing economic populism tailored to Maine’s working-class concerns.

Platner will now face Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican who has served nearly three decades in the Senate and is known for her bipartisan approach. The race is expected to be competitive in the swing state, with national implications for Senate control. Platner’s win highlights the influence of progressive voters in the Democratic primary even amid personal controversies that would have derailed many traditional candidates.

Final results showed Platner dominating the field, advancing to the November general election under Maine’s ranked-choice voting system. The outcome reflects deep divisions within the state’s Democratic Party and voter appetite for anti-establishment voices despite personal baggage.
