Golf-Course Suspect Had Melania’s Schedule and Secret Service Notes, Court Told

Prosecutors told a Los Angeles County judge Wednesday that Jeanine John Taele, the armed man arrested at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles days before President Trump’s visit, possessed first lady Melania Trump’s schedule and detailed notes on Secret Service personnel. The disclosures came as a separate Secret Service inquiry placed three communications officials, including spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, on administrative leave.

Taele, 38, of Downey, a former Marine and licensed security guard, was taken into custody Aug. 2 after plainclothes federal agents spotted him on the Rancho Palos Verdes course. Agents had first seen him July 31 while they assessed security for Trump’s Aug. 4 Republican National Committee dinner. On the day of his arrest he wore an earpiece, photographed and recorded agents’ planning, and told officers he was a State Department employee on a security detail. Deputies recovered a 16-round magazine of hollow-point ammunition from his pants pocket. A search of his pickup in the club parking lot found a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber, another hollow-point magazine, binoculars, and a “security protection agent” badge.

A later search of his home turned up an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a 1911 .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition, radio-signal devices, and seven notebooks totaling 208 pages. Prosecutors said the notebooks contained drawings and sketches of the golf course, lists of Secret Service schedules, details about individual agents, copies of Melania Trump’s schedule, and notes on surviving “off the grid.” Judge John Lonergan Jr. called the allegations “alarming” in an era of political violence. A pretrial evaluation found Taele not mentally fit to stand trial; he appeared in a suicide-prevention smock, falsely claimed 14 years as a State Department official, and was sent to Hollywood Mental Health Court for a Sept. 9 competency hearing. Bail was denied. He also faces a state charge tied to a November 2025 AT&T robbery and a federal count of possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle.

Trump attended the fundraiser two days after the arrest and later told Fox News he takes some solace from the idea that “only consequential presidents” draw such attention. No shooting occurred. Investigators have not publicly said how Taele obtained the first lady’s schedule or agent details—whether from open sources, observation, or something more.

Separately this week, the Secret Service confirmed that three non-law-enforcement employees were placed on administrative leave pending an Office of Professional Responsibility investigation into potential misconduct. Sources identified them as communications-office staff, including Guglielmi. Their security clearances and work devices were suspended, standard during such probes. The agency has not disclosed the alleged misconduct and has not tied the leave to Taele’s notebooks. Guglielmi’s attorney said he is cooperating and has a long record of public service. The timing lands after prior leak inquiries, including a recent look at a member of Vice President JD Vance’s detail, and after two assassination attempts on Trump in 2024.

The notebooks do not prove an inside leak. They do show that a man with a loaded gun, body armor, and a rifle cache was walking a presidential venue with the first lady’s schedule and agent names in his bag. After Butler and the West Palm Beach golf-course attempt, that is the fact that matters until investigators explain how the paper got there.
