WASHINGTON — Fox News contributor and combat-wounded veteran Johnny “Joey” Jones reenlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve on May 20, 2026, during a ceremony at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth administered the oath, welcoming Jones back into uniform as a Staff Sergeant. Jones, 40, had medically retired after eight years of active duty following a life-altering injury in Afghanistan.

Background and Military Service

Born and raised in Dalton, Georgia, Jones enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after high school. He deployed twice during his eight years of service. His first combat tour was as a machine gunner in Iraq’s Al Anbar province in 2007-2008. He later requested and received a lateral move into the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) field.

In 2010, during his deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Jones served as a bomb technician. His team rendered safe and destroyed more than 85 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and thousands of pounds of unknown bulk explosives. On August 6, 2010, Jones stepped on and initiated an IED. The blast resulted in the loss of both legs above the knee and severe damage to his right forearm and both wrists. He underwent extensive recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Post-Injury Career

After his injury, Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a focus on Social and Public Policy from Georgetown University. He became a prominent advocate for wounded veterans, founding peer support programs at Walter Reed and serving as a senior advisor for military transition programs. He joined Fox News as a contributor in 2017, providing military and veterans’ affairs analysis across Fox News Channel, Fox Business, and Fox Nation. He has co-hosted The Big Weekend Show and appeared regularly on The Five and other programs.

Reenlistment and Future Role

Jones will serve in the Marine Corps Reserve while continuing his role at Fox News. His duties will focus on policy and support work for the EOD community inside the Pentagon. He will bring firsthand experience as a combat EOD technician and amputee to help develop improved policies, training, and resources for current Marines in the explosive ordnance disposal and engineer fields.

During the ceremony, Jones spoke emotionally about having “unfinished business” and a remaining “debt to give” to the Corps and his fellow Marines. Hegseth praised Jones for his continued commitment to service and country.

The reenlistment highlights Jones’ enduring dedication to the Marine Corps more than 15 years after his injury. He remains one of the most visible wounded veterans in American media.
