Former FBI Director and Russia Probe Special Counsel Robert Mueller Dies at 81
His family confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away last night.” They did not release further details on the cause of death. Mueller had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021.

Robert S. Mueller III, the former FBI director who served as special counsel in the high-profile investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, died on March 20, 2026, at the age of 81.
His family confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away last night.” They did not release further details on the cause of death. Mueller had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021.
A decorated Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam, Mueller led the FBI from 2001 to 2013 under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He was widely respected for his nonpartisan approach during his 12-year tenure, which included oversight of the post-9/11 transformation of the bureau.
In May 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian election meddling and any links to the Trump campaign. The nearly two-year probe produced a 448-page report that detailed Russian interference but did not establish conspiracy or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. It also examined potential obstruction of justice but stopped short of recommending charges.
The investigation became a central focus of political debate, with critics accusing it of bias and overreach while supporters viewed it as a necessary defense of democratic institutions. Mueller testified before Congress in 2019 in what many described as a subdued performance.
Following the conclusion of the special counsel’s work, Mueller returned to private life. He had largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years due to health issues.
President Donald Trump, who frequently criticized the Russia investigation as a “hoax” and “witch hunt,” posted a brief statement on Truth Social acknowledging Mueller’s passing.
Mueller is survived by his wife, Ann, and their three daughters. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
