The Trump administration is getting set to unleash a wave of federal law enforcement on Washington, D.C., deploying agents from the FBI, ATF, DEA, ICE, Homeland Security, and potentially the National Guard to combat rampant crime starting August 8, 2025. This move aims to transform the nation's capital from a crime-plagued embarrassment into the safest, most beautiful city in America.
"We have a capital that is very unsafe, and we’re going to do something about it," Trump declared, vowing to make DC "the best-run place in the country, not the worst." White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the urgency: "There will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C." The surge, initially set for seven days with potential extension, targets juvenile offenders and violent thugs who have terrorized residents.
The catalyst: A brutal attack on former DOGE staffer Edward Coristine, beaten by a gang during a carjacking attempt. Trump blasted the incident on Truth Social, demanding minors as young as 14 be prosecuted as adults and locked up long-term. "If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, we will have no choice but to take Federal control," he warned.
Building on his March executive order to "Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful," Trump is bolstering the Metropolitan Police with federal resources for recruitment, retention, and expertise. Plans include repealing the 1973 Home Rule Act to end local mismanagement that allowed crime to fester.
DC's homicide rate tops global capitals at 41 per 100,000 from 2019-2024, with juvenile crimes against persons quadrupling since 2020. Trump's approach promises swift justice, cleaner streets, and a revitalized capital for all Americans.
