Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Administration Suit Against New York City Sanctuary Laws

U.S. District Judge Ramon Reyes ruled the Trump administration cannot sue New York City over its sanctuary policies because federal law does not require local disclosure of release dates and state law bars certain local arrests for immigration purposes.

A federal judge in New York rejected the Trump administration’s challenge to New York City’s sanctuary city laws, delivering a setback to efforts to compel greater local cooperation with immigration enforcement.

U.S. District Judge Ramon Reyes dismissed the suit filed in 2025. The administration argued that city restrictions limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities violated the Constitution. Reyes held that Washington could not sue the city because federal law does not require local authorities to disclose the release dates of criminals facing deportation. He further ruled that the administration could not challenge a ban on police arresting immigrants on behalf of the federal government, because state law already prohibited the practice.

The decision aligns with other litigation in which courts have constrained the administration’s ability to force sanctuary jurisdictions to assist with detainers or information sharing. The Trump administration has pursued multiple challenges against major cities’ policies while expanding interior enforcement and deportations.

Neither the Justice Department nor New York City officials immediately detailed next steps in response to the ruling. The case centered on specific statutory and state-law barriers rather than a broad constitutional invalidation of all sanctuary measures.

Just the News reported the outcome citing Reuters. The ruling leaves NYC’s existing restrictions in place pending any appeal.
