Federal Agents Visiting Homes of Suspected Noncitizen Voters Ahead of Midterms

Federal agents are visiting homes in several states to ask residents about their immigration status and voting history, according to reporting on stepped-up enforcement ahead of the midterm elections. The activity is part of broader Justice Department and Homeland Security efforts to enforce the prohibition on noncitizen voting in federal elections.

The visits follow recent DOJ charges against dozens of noncitizens, including 28 lawful permanent residents in California charged with fraudulent voter registration or casting ballots. The department has also sued California over lists of likely noncitizens who received mail ballots and has provided similar lists to other states.

Officials have described noncitizen voting as a priority for investigation and prosecution. Earlier this month the department announced charges involving aliens in multiple districts for illegal voting, false citizenship claims, and related offenses. State and local officials in some jurisdictions have disputed the scale of the problem or the methods used to identify potential cases.

The home visits represent an operational phase of the enforcement campaign. Agents are seeking information that can support further charges or administrative action before ballots are cast and counted on November 3.
