FBI Arrests McKinney Teen Accused of ISIS-Inspired Plot to Assassinate Rep. Keith Self
The FBI arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney, Texas, early this month after he obtained a firearm and allegedly planned to attack Rep. Keith Self and carry out a broader terrorist act on behalf of ISIS.

The FBI arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney, Texas, on or about October 5 after he obtained a firearm and was allegedly preparing to attack Rep. Keith Self and carry out a broader terrorist act on behalf of ISIS.
Federal law enforcement sources told WFAA that the juvenile had been radicalized recently and was already under surveillance. Agents moved once he acquired a firearm. The alleged target was a veterans chili-cook-off fundraiser scheduled for October 17 that Self was expected to attend. Self’s office confirmed that Capitol Police notified the congressman after the arrest. He stated he was never in immediate danger and thanked law enforcement for stopping the threat.
Self, a retired Army officer who served 25 years and represents Texas’s 3rd District, has been outspoken against radical Islam and Sharia law. He co-founded the Sharia-Free America Caucus with Rep. Chip Roy and introduced a non-binding resolution condemning Sharia implementation in the United States. In statements he said protecting the constitutional republic from radical Islam “is getting messy” and that the episode strengthens his resolve. He added that he will not back down.
The suspect’s name has not been released because he is a juvenile. He remains in federal custody. Prosecutors are reportedly considering whether to seek adult status. No injuries occurred, and authorities have not released further charging details. The FBI declined to comment when asked for confirmation.
Governor Greg Abbott praised the arrest, stating that radical Islamic terrorism has no place in Texas and that the state will combat it in all forms. The case adds to recent reports of ISIS-linked activity inside the United States. Self has continued campaign appearances in his district while early voting proceeds.
