Erika Kirk's Commencement Speech Urges Hillsdale Graduates to Pursue Truth, Marry Young and Love America (Video)

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Erika Kirk, CEO of Turning Point USA, delivered the keynote address at Hillsdale College’s 174th commencement ceremony on May 9, where she and her late husband Charlie Kirk received honorary doctorates of public service.
Hillsdale President Larry Arnn conferred the degrees and praised the couple’s commitment to education and civic life. Arnn recalled first meeting Charlie Kirk as a persistent 19-year-old and later meeting Erika, describing her as resilient and strong following her husband’s assassination in September 2025.
In her speech to more than 300 graduates and an audience of about 5,000, Erika shared personal stories highlighting Charlie’s love of learning. She recounted how, during their 2021 honeymoon, Charlie completed an online Hillsdale course using a satellite phone, emphasizing his dedication to self-improvement even in personal moments.
Erika encouraged graduates to embrace lifelong learning, build deep friendships, and seek truth amid a world that often challenges or distorts it. “Your responsibility is not to reflect the world,” she said. “If you want to make a difference, it is very hard to do that when you look just like it.”
She urged intentional living centered on faith, family, and purpose. Erika advocated marrying young — not rushed, but early — and having children, echoing Charlie’s advice. She stressed that comfort alone cannot sustain a meaningful life and called for placing Jesus Christ at the center.
Erika closed by encouraging love of country. “It’s not perfect, but it is the greatest nation ever,” she said. “Love her.”
The ceremony took place at the Biermann Athletic Center as the college, known for its classical liberal arts curriculum and independence from federal funding, continues its emphasis on Western heritage and constitutional principles. Erika assumed leadership of Turning Point USA after her husband’s death and holds degrees from Arizona State University and Liberty University.
