DOJ Subpoenas Ilhan Omar’s Relatives in Immigration Fraud Probe After DC Home Search
The Justice Department has issued subpoenas to relatives of Rep. Ilhan Omar, including her sister Sahra Noor, in an ongoing criminal investigation into the family’s immigration paperwork. The step follows Monday’s search of her D.C. home.

The Justice Department has issued subpoenas to relatives of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into possible fraud and false statements in her family’s immigration paperwork, according to people familiar with the matter.
Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, received a subpoena, as did at least one other person in her family circle. Grand jury subpoenas are used to gather evidence and do not mean the recipients themselves are under investigation. Noor, a healthcare professional and author of a memoir about immigrating from Somalia, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The inquiry has focused in recent months on the immigration history of Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, and whether he lied or omitted information on forms before becoming a U.S. citizen. Omar has said she became a citizen at age 17 through her father’s naturalization after the family arrived as refugees from Somalia in 1995.
The subpoenas follow Monday’s execution of a judicially authorized search warrant by Homeland Security Investigations agents at Omar’s Washington, D.C., home. Agents removed boxes of documents. The Justice Department confirmed the search was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but has not detailed the specific allegations. Sources have described potential examination of false statements, immigration fraud, and conspiracy.
Omar responded to the home search by posting on X that she was okay and that the action was “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” She said Trump has targeted her for ten years with “baseless lies and smear campaigns” and added, “I will not be silenced.” Her office called the raid an “outrageous abuse of power.” She has repeatedly denied immigration wrongdoing.
Previous federal inquiries into Omar’s immigration history have not produced charges. House Democratic leaders described the home search as deeply disturbing. The investigation continues weeks before the November midterm elections.
This remains a developing story. Additional information will be reported as it becomes available.
