DOJ Launches Title VI Investigation into DEI Programs at Arizona State University
The probe was prompted by recent viral videos showing ASU staff discussing continued DEI efforts under rebranded terms like “inclusive excellence,” allegedly to evade federal and state scrutiny.

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division opened a formal Title VI investigation on June 3, 2026, into Arizona State University’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices over concerns they illegally discriminate against students based on race, color, or national origin.
The probe was prompted by recent viral videos showing ASU staff discussing continued DEI efforts under rebranded terms like “inclusive excellence,” allegedly to evade federal and state scrutiny. Arizona law has banned race-based preferences in public education since 2010.
ASU, one of the nation’s largest universities and a major recipient of federal funding, faces examination of its policies in admissions, recruitment, scholarships, tutoring, and educational support programs.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon stated the department is committed to rooting out hidden discrimination. The investigation will determine if ASU subjects students to illegal discrimination while attempting to conceal practices from federal oversight.
ASU officials said the university complies with all federal and state laws and called the videos unauthorized recordings. Outcomes could include compliance agreements, loss of federal funding, or other enforcement actions if violations are confirmed.
This action is part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to eliminate race-based programs in federally funded institutions.
